How to choose the right moving boxes?
- Posted by
Newpack
Moving is considered to be one of the most tedious and time-consuming tasks. You have to take care of many things, including packing each item, and it may be hard to do everything by yourself. There are so many things to deal with that sometimes people miss out on little details. And to choose the right moving boxes is one of the little details we tend to miss. There are many factors to consider while choosing one. But there is no need to be hassled about it. Moving or shifting doesn’t have to be something so annoying and stressful if you know the basics.
You can’t move stuff without boxes. Why is it so important to choose the right size of moving boxes, and with so many options available online and in stores, how do you know where to start?
Of course, quality moving boxes are essential when moving home or your office belongings. Selecting the right size of moving boxes is necessary for a successful packing process.
One of the essential steps in ensuring that your personal belongings are protected during a move is to choose the boxes of the correct size and strength. Moving boxes can be too heavy or bulky to lift or not strong enough to protect fragile belongings. The result of using the wrong-sized moving boxes can also mean opening boxes full of damaged dishes, electronics, or household furnishings after transit.
The first thing you need to do is to take a good look at all your belongings. You should make a list of all your belongings and divide them by weight. You can even divide them by size as well. Divide and assort your items aside in different groups. This way, you can count them and get a good idea of how many boxes you need and what size.
The three tips given below will further help you understand the criteria for choosing the right moving boxes. So let’s get started!
You need to know about the various size and types of boxes
The most important consideration to make when choosing moving boxes is the size of the boxes. Moving boxes come in various sizes and designs. You will require moving boxes of different sizes to pack all of your belongings. Moving boxes typically come in sizes: small, medium, large & extra-large.
Make sure you select the right box for the right items. The small moving boxes can be used for packing books, tapes, videos, tools, small appliances, and small kitchen items. As far as the medium moving boxes are concerned, they are used for packing items such as kitchen utensils and items, smaller stereo equipment, linens, and toys. The large-sized box is used for packing big oversized items. The extra-large moving box is used for extra bulky items like pillows and comforters.
There are individual versatile boxes explicitly designed to fit certain fragile items. For example, the wine box for carrying bottles is designed to protect and cushion fragile items as it has double-walled protection. We can differentiate by merely looking at the difference in the thickness and a regular box.
Strength
The valuable items that you pack inside the box stay safe throughout transit because of the boxes’ strength to withhold the items’ weight. It is always advisable to use the most robust strongest moving boxes you can find. This usually suggests that you should purchase moving boxes from your trusted packaging company. If you want complete safety and security of your items, consider buying your moving boxes from Newpack.
Quantity
It will help if you are clear on how many boxes you require for moving your stuff. The exact number of boxes needed can be determined by looking at your home/ office size, how much of your belongings you will be taking with you, the number of people in your family, etc. It is estimated that you need 20- 25 boxes of varying sizes if you are moving only 1 to 2 rooms. And larger homes, with 7 to 8 rooms, can require as many as 90 to 100 boxes.
Finally, once you have assessed your requirement of no. of boxes and their strength and sizes, it’s time to get packing! Using the right moving boxes, you can ensure better protection for your belongings and avoid potential damages on moving day. Choose the right size & type and have an excellent relocation experience!
How to choose the best packaging Tape?

Are you moving house and looking for the best way to seal your boxes?
Wondering about various packaging materials required and how to select them? Pondering over such questions is quite normal, but one should always get themselves updated whenever possible.
One of the most fundamental requirements for packing of any sort is “Packing Tape.” Packing tape is used to seal, wrap, bundle items for storage or during shipment. There are various types of packing tapes available, and they differ in material, strength, thickness, width, and so on. One needs to be careful in choosing the right type of tape which suits their requirements.
So, how to choose the best packaging tape that will suit your needs? Don’t worry; we’ve listed all the essential factors that you need to keep in mind. This will help you make well-informed decisions at present or in the future.
1. Material used for the tape
In packing tape, the grade refers to the fabrication of the tape. Grades are made of varying levels of film and adhesive thickness. These grades deliver a diverse range of holding power and tensile strength. Higher grades include thick tapes with many adhesives designed for maximum hold, best suited for heavy-duty sealing. The wider tape is more substantial and will be able to hold more weight. Thin tape may prove to be useful for combining items inside of the boxes.
2. Adhesive strength
When moving, you will want tape with a strong adhesive. This generally implies picking a tape with hot melt inside or acrylic adhesive.
3. Temperature resistance
Always keep in mind the temperatures your boxes and packing tape will endure during transit. You need to contemplate a bit about how your products will be stored and transported to select the right type of tape. Rain, humidity, and other environmental factors will affect your tape’s stickiness, which can affect the integrity of your packaging.
4. Don’t forget about the Quality
The quality of your tape will affect the working capacity of your system. A higher-quality tape is less likely to break or tear, which means your work can run smoothly without any hindrance. Inconsistencies in your tape can slow down your packaging and, at times, even irritate the person handling the tape.
Remember, there are more than ten different types, but not all are made for packaging. Choosing the right tape to seal your packing boxes is important. Using the wrong tape could cause your packages to open or even fall apart, causing damage to your valuable possessions. We have heard of people using different tapes, including duct tapes, masking tapes, or insulation tapes. However, it is important to keep in mind that these tapes are not ideal for securing cardboard boxes.
The points mentioned above were the standard requirements of a tape. Apart from that, when it comes to picking the right packaging tape, you have to consider several factors – such as the package’s weight and dimensions, the package contents’ stability, securing requirements, the strength of the box, and shipping methods. For example, corrugated boxes with lightweight contents and sometimes even heavy packages might need a regular BOPP tape with a thick micron. Many leading shipping services recommend the use of BOPP tapes or paper tapes.
Eventually, it all comes down to your needs and requirements. Picking the most appropriate tape for any task can save you from a lot of stress. So, be sure to always invest in the right tape!
We hope this article will help you understand the necessary information about packaging tapes and how to choose them!

Different Types of Packaging Tape and their Uses

While selecting a packing tape for yourself, you should look for the tape’s materials, adhesive strength, quality, and temperature resistance. All these factors help in deciding what kind of tape you require for packing your boxes. Choosing the right type of tape needed for your business is very important because there are chances that if you do not select the right type, it can result in a loss of time, money, and efforts which will eventually lead to a loss in business. There are specific terminologies related to packaging tape that you can use to your benefit, and it will help you in the future to choose the suitable one according to your need:
1.Tensile strength: is the force required to break a tape. It is measured by taking a one-inch-wide piece of tape, grabbing it at both ends, and then pulling in opposite directions to the point where it breaks.
2.Backing material: The backing material of an adhesive tape is a relatively thin, flexible web-based material coated with an adhesive. There are various types of backing material, for example, polypropylene, cloth, and vinyl.
3.Elongation: Elongation is a measure of the extent to which a tape can stretch before breaking. It’s measured in percentages; elongation is a good indicator of how a tape handles or responds to the constant stress of being stretched.
4.Core size: The diameter of the inside tape roll.
5.Dimensions: The length, breadth, and width of the tape are the dimensions.
When packaging is the core job to be performed, many items are needed to secure the package boxes like tapes, tape guns, strapping tools, and many others. Out of these, the tapes offer a perfect finishing touch to the package boxes. Be it for the packaging, construction, or painting industry, the market is filled with innumerable tapes, and each has its own unique features. Some of the most commonly used tapes in the packaging industry are listed below:
1. Double-sided tapes
A thin layer of adhesive is coated on both sides of a carrier substrate material to create a double-sided tape. These tapes have multi-purpose applications and can be used to secure many items or things. Double-sided tapes can be thick and thin and are of different types, i.e., cotton, foam, paper, and many more. You can choose the type of double-sided tape, depending on the surface you are packaging. One clear example where it is most commonly used is for gift wrapping where cards or flowers can be pasted on to the gift in a smart concealed way.
2. Recycled tapes
These tapes are a greener option and also come in both transparent and invisible varieties. The adhesives are entirely plant-based and can be used on regular slotted containers with a weight of not more than 100 lbs.
3. Transparent tapes
These are the traditional clear packaging tapes that help in fastening and excellently holding package boxes. The tapes’ adhesive strength gives a solid bonding that holds for a very long time and the tapes’ glossiness makes the packages look appealing. Clear transparent tapes are almost always in demand due to their strong bonding strength and are useful to all businesses requiring packaging materials like paper bags, mailing bags, envelopes, etc.
4. Brown tapes
Brown packaging tape is one of the essential packaging supplies for many businesses out there. Brown tape is ideal for a seamless finish on cardboard, which can be used on almost anything. These are particularly useful on brown paper and cardboard boxes as it blends in. These tapes are heavy-duty tapes and are among the best options to secure a box well in place.
5. Vinyl cross-weave tapes
This is the strongest among all the packing tapes that helps keep the product; safe inside the package box for months together with the help of strong hot melt adhesives. The chance of leakage or wastage is close to zero with this packaging.
6. Printed tapes
The tape which gives a different perspective to packaging is the printed tape. Printed tapes display the vital packaging message very loud and clear. You can opt for printed tapes to increase your brand awareness among people by securing your packages with a printed tape that has your company logo or carries your brand name. These tapes can also alert the courier people as they have warning messages printed, allowing them to be careful when loading and unloading the boxes.
The primary goal of packaging tapes is to securely hold our packaging together and keep the contents of the package safe. Newpack’s online store offers the widest variety of packaging tapes for different customer needs. From Clear packaging Virgin BOPP tape, Brown Tape to ‘Warning’ Printed Tapes, we have it all. Now you can do thorough research about packaging tapes and select them according to your requirements and preferences.
How to compost your Compostable Mailers
- Posted by
Newpack
Compostable packaging has begun to receive a lot of attention for its outstanding qualities. However, there is still a lack of awareness or knowledge about compostable packaging or what to do with compostable packaging. We’re seeing many companies adopting the new compostable packaging materials (including Newpack), whether in the form of cups, forks, take-out food containers, or mailers. It’s great to see this, and it’s a fantastic example of a step in the right direction for a promising future. The most exciting part is that the consumers who buy these products also have a role to play.
What does Compostable mean?
Composting is the natural process that allows organic matter to decay and turn into compost. You can collect your kitchen waste and create a small compost pile, which could turn into useful fertilizer for the kitchen garden. This can be done in your backyard—or even in compost containers as some creative people have come up with ways to compost in small apartments. Compostable packaging would mean that the materials can decompose into nutrient-rich soil within a certain period in a home-compost bin.
So what are biodegradable products? Aren’t they the same thing?
The answer to this is yes – the compost breaks down into the earth but adds nutrients to the soil while doing so. The term ‘biodegradable’ sets no limit on how long the process of decomposition takes. Even a regular plastic-made poly mailer is biodegradable – but the whole process of decomposition can take hundreds of years! Compostable packaging is different in that way. The waste material breaks down into natural elements within a very short period in a proper compost setting faster than ‘biodegradable’ products. Compostable packaging is also considered sustainable packaging because it releases no harmful residues as the materials break down. In short, everything composable is biodegradable, but everything biodegradable is not compostable.
What are Compostable Mailers?
Compostable mailers are the replacements of the old plastic mailers with new plant-based mailers. Poly mailers are efficient shipping mailers that protect your products from weather conditions and during transit from the factory to the customer. However, unlike poly mailers, these compostable mailers are made from plant-based materials such as PLA and a certified compostable material called PBAT. So a big no-no for plastic!
These tear-resistant shipping bags are made out of 100% corn-based polymers. This makes them easily compostable in a home or industrial compost heap. This creates an opportunity for a circular economy where sustainable packaging materials can be disposed of by the users for alternative uses without harming the environment.
It will only take about 6 months to completely break down and decompose in your very own backyard or compost bin. They are also durable, stretchable & water-proof. It distributes weight evenly, prevents tear & weather protection for shipping in all climate conditions. It releases no harmful residues while composting.
So how exactly do you decompose them?
The best thing about a compostable mailer is that it’s a mailer that can be reused. If the mailer’s condition is good, you can use it for another package before you think about composting it. All you may have to do is remove or cover any shipping labels and seal it with eco-friendly tape to reuse it. By doing this, you just saved yourself the cost of a new bag and gave this one a second life. After one or more usage, once you’re sure that your bag has reached the end of its life, here’s how you can compost it.
At the time of its final disposal, you will need to remove all the shipping labels, stickers, and adhesives from your package, and that’s about it – you’re ready to compost now! Just drop the bag in your compost bin or heap if you have one in your backyard alongside your other bio-waste. It will take about 180 days to break down into the soil. Easy-peasy, lemon squeezy!
Don’t worry if you haven’t started composting at home yet, or you don’t have a home compost facility. You can find plenty of places around the neighbourhood to drop your mailer bag, simply search on the internet for ‘composting facilities’ around you. Sometimes you can find pick-up services, or otherwise, you can find a convenient location to drop off your compost. Trust the process – it’s easier than you think!
Last but not least, the role of the consumer is key to participate in this drive for sustainability as without their usage and conscious efforts to dispose of the used mailers for composting, the whole idea would be rendered moot.
Newpack is committed for this, are you? Start using the compostable mailers and go green!!
